2 Shaker Bay Rd., Architect Kate Johns

The theme of this home is from an 1892 South Hampton Shingle Style by the great architect of the late 1800's, Stanford White. White designed it for his friend the American impressionist William Merritt Chase. The house appears in many of his paintings such as "The Bayberry Bush".

The ideal architect for this modern composition on a 110 year old theme is Kate Johns, a preservationist with many noteworthy successes at bringing yesterday's character to today's homes.

The main section above is quite true to the original and the Carriage House makes an exemplary compliment to it. Much changed in back is the distinctive belvedere and bright window walls.

A winter tree room joins house to Carriage House.

The Au Pair quarters over the Carriage house look out on entry lawns and the valley beyond.

The artist's studio area became the living room.
